Rachel is a visual communicator who believes that design provides a strong agency in challenging our preconceptions which in turn inspires us to constantly reimagine the everyday. With a human-centric methodology, she pursues this through a rigorous process of research as well as a multi-disciplinary approach in order to create design that is meaningful. &#38;nbsp;
A true introvert at heart, you would find me most of the time with my headphones stuck to my head or slowly catching up to the vast storytelling of the anime One Piece. Other times you would find me updating my Instagram photography junk account (@loh.rach).&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Reimagining CosmopolisRachel Loh
Reimagining Cosmopolis seeks to redefine Singapore’s exclusionary interpretation of a cosmopolis through the experiences of the transnational migrant working class by examining the spatial politics specifically in this highly curated setting. By subverting the current views of cosmopolitanism in hopes to have a more emancipatory outlook, a study on the transient nature and spatial mobility of Malaysian blue collar workers are examined to investigate how these bodies that sweat, those that endure arduous labor, are treated and rendered invisible.

With this, this project also proposes a placemaking initiative that hopes to build a sense of belonging and place despite the impermanent nature of a migrant worker in Singapore as an inquiry to how power is projected on a micro scale and mundane space such as a bus stop.&#38;nbsp;

Ordinary Heroes is a card game that aims to instil compassion and empathy in children for the older generation.

This project addresses the issue of the ageing population in Singapore and the lack of understanding towards the elderly. We believe that the the values of compassion and empathy would be the most effectively taught at a young age, specifically four to six. Through this game, we hope to create meaningful intergenerational interactions that allows children, parents as well as elderly members of the family to spend quality time together.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Intimacy - A Sense of PlaceRachel Loh

A park is commonly seen with people doing leisure activities to relax and enjoy. However, in Singapore, where it is a small country, places are often planned out in a very detailed and precise manner and are often built close together due to the lack of land.

East Coast park was a project mainly built on reclaimed land and it was created with a mindset for “recreation for all”. With this, I want to focus how various people that visit the park interact with this man made environment in a spaced constraint setting. It also brings in this issue of the artificiality of curated nature where roads, food centers and playgrounds are carefully planned to cater to the people’s needs which then forces an intamate relationship between human and nature.

“You Were Here &#124; Wish You Were Here” explores the relationship between my father who has to work overseas and I. Often when a parent has to work abroad, they do not have much choice which has led to an absence of a father figure during
my childhood.
Photographs shown are of personal archive and was presented in an artist book. It narrates a story from two perspectives of distance between my father who had to adjust quickly to living in a foreign country as well as the feeling of longing I felt as a child.&#38;nbsp;

Once the news of the theme was announced, we were quite perplexed with the direction of the brief. Taking this as inspiration, we were certain that it may not be just us but also the audience that feels this sense of confusion as well as anticipation of what the actual branding and programmes the event would entail. From this, we decided to use the motive of n+? to enforce this sense of mystery of this year’s theme. These were some of the iterations we had done and we decided to go with the merging and blurring of these letters to illustrate the notion of fluidity and open-ended response to natasha.&#38;nbsp;

This project explores letterform and what makes a letter recognizable to us. By pushing the legibility while still sticking to the grid system, my final outcome was a poster with the various weights of light, regular and bold of the letter C. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Process

Before I begin the process of ideating my letter with a grid system. I first compiled a library of images that I could refer to that resembes each letter in alphabetical order. This eases me into thinking letters as shape and form rather than letters to simply read. This also allowed me to examine what specific characteristics in each letter that makes it recognizable to us.&#38;nbsp;

These were some iterations of the letter the letter C.I mainly used minimal points to create a letter. I was interested in how even with minimal points and negative spaces, our eyes are still able to make out the letter. I have also designed with the idea that if it was sliced in half, the shape of the letter will be reflected accordingly. From this, I have kept the distinct characteristics and integrity of the letter such as the uniformed curve and the negative space inside it.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

However, with more observations on the letter, I found that the letter felt too flat. With this, I came up with another iteration of the letter with multiple different sizes for the points to give a sense of movement and make it more dynamic. The use of using multiple sizes was to give a dinimishing effect as well.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Once I had the final iterations finalized, I started to work on the poster design of my letter. What was important was to clearly communicate the form and the 3 different weights of the letter. This was one of my drafts I did and with some feedback, th main element that could have been improved was to showcase the different weights with more clarity. With this in mind, I went back to make some minor adjustments to my letter.&#38;nbsp;

With this in mind, I have made minor refinements for my weights so that the differentiation would be more apparent. I have changed the points by making minor increments to the letter.&#38;nbsp;
